Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Project type
Custom Shoes and Cleats
Date
July 10, 2021
Toronto Blue Jays first baseman and designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr. can be spotted proudly showing off his Yo Soy Custom-made Jordan 1 shoes during games. The sneakers read "Dominican Slugger" across the Nike logo and also feature a Blue Jays logo and print of a baseball on the side. His Jordan's were hand-painted in numerous colors, including shades of blue, red, white, brown and black.
He got a pair of custom cleats as well. These Jordan 10's are a tribute to his strong religious beliefs, and feature a painting of Mary on the outer side of one shoe and Jesus on the outer side of the other, both on top of a crisp yellow and red starburst pattern. The inner side of the shoes feature hands in prayer over the starburst pattern. All sides of the sneakers feature Spanish phrases like Dios te Bendiga ("God Bless You" in English).
Guerrero is a Canadian-Dominican professional baseball first baseman and designated hitter for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball. Making his major league debut in 2019, he is the son of baseball Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr.
ESPN featured Guerrero and his kicks in July 2021: www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/31892305/vlad-guerrero-jr-rocks-custom-made-toronto-blue-jays-jordan-1s
As ESPN pointed out in the article, "Guerrero is the first Blue Jays player with 80 RBIs before August since Edwin Encarnción had 89 through July 2016 and the youngest player in franchise history to do it. The only other Blue Jays to accomplish the feat before turning 25 were John Olerud in 1993 and Vernon Wells in 2003."
Recently Guerrera commissioned a third pair of cleats, also Jordan 1's -- this time in white, black, navy blue and light blue (the Toronto Blue Jays' team colors). These feature the word "plakata" across the back with a small red Canadian leaf highlight. Plakata is used in baseball to refer to a hitter that makes good, solid contact with the ball, usually resulting in a home run.
